What is a Urinary System Ultrasound?

Urinary system ultrasound is an imaging method performed to evaluate your kidneys and bladder. During this scan, other pelvic structures such as the prostate in men, and the uterus and ovaries in women, are also evaluated.

A renal ultrasound may be requested to investigate side pain, kidney stones, hematuria, decreased kidney function, trauma, urinary tract infections, incontinence, and changes in bladder function.

A urinary system ultrasound will be performed by a radiologist. A clear gel is applied to the skin over the area to be examined. The ultrasound probe is then moved across the skin surface to examine the following structures. You will be asked to hold your breath and assume certain positions to ensure your organs are best visualized during the exam.

Kidney Ultrasound

In medicine, the urinary system refers to a diagnostic medical imaging technique of the abdomen, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, and bladder; however, the ureters are only visible if abnormally distended. Urinary system ultrasound is an examination requested by your doctor to evaluate the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. The prostate gland is also scanned in male patients.

Why is a urinary system ultrasound performed?

To look for changes in the bladder wall

To look for changes in the size or structure of the kidneys

To look for stones in the urinary tract

To assess the causes of recurring kidney infections

To determine the cause of renal or pelvic pain

What is examined during a urinary system ultrasound?

Since bladder volume measurements are taken when the bladder is full, the bladder can only be properly assessed when full or distended.

Both the bladder and kidneys are scanned after the bladder is emptied to evaluate the amount of retained urine.

In male patients, the prostate volume is measured.

During a urinary system ultrasound examination, we will perform a detailed study of the size, shape, and condition of the following:

The bladder, both when full and immediately after it has been emptied (You will be sent to a restroom to empty your bladder)

Both the right and left kidneys, and ureters

The prostate gland (in males)

At the end of the examination, you will receive a written report along with images, if necessary, to indicate abnormal findings.

What preparation is required for a urinary ultrasound scan?

A full bladder is required, so you will need to drink several glasses of water one hour before your scan. Please do not empty your bladder during this time.

How is a urinary system ultrasound performed?

A urinary system ultrasound examination is non-invasive and painless. You will be asked to lie on your back and expose your lower abdomen. Our qualified and experienced radiologist will obtain the necessary images by moving a transducer coated with warm gel across your lower abdomen. You may ask questions during the examination. If desired, you may bring someone with you into the examination room (please no children), and if you need assistance or a companion, one of our healthcare staff will be available.
