You may need this test if your doctor suspects the following:

Kidney disease, ureter or bladder stones, prostate enlargement, trauma or injury to the urinary tract, tumors

Today, the main indications for IVP are hematuria, urinary system stones, ureteral fistulas, strictures, and the investigation of complex urinary system infections. It is also used to evaluate the ureters before gynecological and colorectal malignancy surgeries and to assess the donor’s kidneys in transplants.

Your doctor may also use this test to determine the cause of side pain or spasm-like pain in the kidney area.

A CT scan of the kidneys will provide a more accurate diagnosis of kidney problems caused by tumors or trauma.

From 24 hours before the procedure, high-fiber foods, fried foods, and meat should not be consumed. Clear soups, juice without pulp, unsweetened soda, unsweetened black coffee, or tea can be consumed. Especially milk, creamy drinks, and gassy drinks should be avoided. Drinking plenty of water is recommended (e.g., one glass per hour).

IVP (Intravenous Pyelography) and Patient Preparation:

For bowel cleansing, a laxative should be taken orally about 14 hours before the procedure. The type of laxative and its usage will be determined by the radiologist based on the patient’s age and weight, so the patient must visit our center before the test. No food or drinks should be consumed from the morning of the procedure until the test is performed. The test should be attended on an empty stomach.

The examination begins with a supine abdominal X-ray. In intravenous contrast imaging, low or high osmolarity water-soluble iodinated contrast agents are used. After the injection, three images are usually taken at 3-5, 7-15, and 20-30 minutes to visualize the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. If necessary, a post-void spot image of the bladder is taken.

The average procedure duration is 20-30 minutes, but it may be extended in cases of obstructive kidney disease.

After the procedure, the patient can return to their normal daily activities. The examination is evaluated and reported by a radiologist. The films and the examination report are delivered to the patient. If there are no clinical reasons to restrict them, patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids after the examination.

Inform Your Doctor If:

You are pregnant or suspect you might be pregnant.
